Wrongdoers in our society can be held criminally or civilly liable for their actions. When a person commits a criminal offense, they are prosecuted by the state on behalf of the public. A criminal offense is not only an offense against the victim, but an offense against society, and the state has a duty to maintain law and order and deter others from committing similar offenses.
